1945: Japan stops fighting resulting in the end of World War II.

1947 - Pakistan becomes an independent country from Britain with Mohammed Ali Jinnah as president.

1935 – Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the
Social Security Act, creating a government pension system for the retired.

1968: Floods in India claim more than 1,000 lives in seven days.

2006 – Sixty-one schoolgirls killed in
Chencholai bombing by Sri Lankan Air Force air strike.
